in3uk has a great answer! As a participant in breed rescue, I have seen some gorgeous examples of my chosen breed come through and get adopted for very reasonable donations. (I adopted one myself!) Many of these groups get puppies, or very young dogs. You can google the breed you want and all kinds of rescue groups will pop up for you to contact.

if you are a good breeder.. you dont have to advertise. You get enough puppy buyers thru word of mouth. Good breeders ussually have waiting lists too before they breed, and dont always have pups available.

I would check out the breed’s parent club and get a referral thru there. You can find the breed’s club the.

the newspaper is a good one! most people do not look online for dogs they look in papers and shelters. also if u want an add online try craigslist.

For reputable breeders, they usually have a waiting list. If you want a good quality companion, you should go to AKC website to look for breeders of the specific breed, go to the breed’s national club to look for breeders or visit conformation shows at your area. You speak to these breeders at the shows. If they have puppies available, maybe you can arrange to visit the premises of the breeder.

No reputable breeder advertises on a public website. This includes nextdaypets.com, puppyfind.com, puppyfinder.com, and all those other types of sites. Any decent breeder has a personal website which shows you their bloodlines and any pups the breeder has available or is expecting. Typically there are no prices discussed online, and most definitely you cannot pay for a dog online. There will be contact information so you can get in touch with the breeder and discuss their terms and whether or not they would be willing to sell you a puppy. Reputable breeders typically require a questionaire from you, a personal interview, and sometimes a home inspection or full-family interview. They want to make sure their pups are going to the very best homes possible. Non-show quality dogs are sold on a spay/neuter contract which requires you to desex the dog as soon as it is medically safe to do so.

Anyone who offers to sell a dog for a given price, no questions asked, is someone to stay away from. If they don’t care where their dogs go, it’s because they know they’re selling crappy dogs.

What you need to do is decide what breed you want and look on under their breeder contacts, or look up the local breed club in your area and see what contacts are on there. Even try a google search for “(Breed) kennels/breeders in (your area)” and investigate any websites that come up. Whatever you do, never, EVER use ANY website that allows random people to post ads for puppies- you’ll either get scammed out of a lot of money, or sold a sickly, bargain-bin puppy that will drain away every cent you have in vet bills, and could quite possibly even die on you.

A reputable breeder will not sell their pups on ebay or Craigslist. The first thing you need to know is what to look for in a breeder. Do a google search and start reading. Once you have done that, you need to know what to look for in a pup. It took me a couple of years worth of research before I selected my dog’s breeder. Just be sure you know what you’re getting into because you want a healthy companion, not a big burden. You really do need to meet the pup, his parents and sibs before purchasing the dog. Do not have a pup flown in from another state, and please do not buy a pup from a pet store. Meet the breeder face to face, know the conditions the dogs are being bred and whelped in….know the genetics, the health histories, the pedigree, etc.

Or, you could save yourself from all of this and find a pup at a shelter. There are so many that need good homes! I have one pedigree that I purchased from a reputable breeder, and I also have a rescue—I love them both the same, and they are both wonderful dogs!

Use the AKC breeder referral service to contact a breeder affiliated with the official breed club of the breed you’re interested in:

Anybody selling their puppies on any kind of advertising site or in a newspaper is a puppy miller or backyard breeder. As people already told you in a former post, reputable, ethical breeders who breed thoroughly tested, show-ring titled dams and sires from quality bloodlines do not need to advertise their puppies as merchandise: they’ll have waiting lists and rehoming procedures and will want to discuss many aspects of ownership with you and meet you in person before agreeing to allow you one of their puppies.

Breed rescues and shelters are great places to find dogs of all ages in need of new homes. The breed clubs in the AKC link I gave up above can also help you find breed-specific shelters and rescues who can assess you and match you to the dog which is right for your lifestyle and experience.

your best bet is the breed clubs website (and going to breeders websites from there) and petfinder.com

Puppyfind is for BYBs so I wouldnt expect too much better from them than I would a puppy mill- that is where their breed stock typically comes from.
