What happens if a dog makes puppies with a family member? Will the puppies be abnormal?

yearyt asked:

I was just wondering, what if for example a dog impregnated its’ own mother or sister, will their puppies be abnormal?Because for us humans if we did it with a family member, the baby would be abnormal, right?

Usually, it takes a few generations of inbreeding, or incest, to cause the offspring to be abnormal.

This is called inbreeding. The pups will be at a higher risk for health problems, mental retardation, and a slew of other goofy defects, much like inbred human children.

there is a higher chance of abnormalities and birth defects.. as well as a higher chance of health issues. yes.

Some breeders may use inbreeding or line breeding to breed away from health issues, but this is only done after extensive genetic testing and study of the pedigree and genetics.. even then, I dont know a breeder who would breed a pup to its parent or sibling.. as its too likely they will share a rare genetic disorder.

that close inbreeding will show up genetic problems and can cause some quite nasty problems in the puppies. I have a dog from a suspected close mating and he really does have some bad physical deformities and problems.

You should never breed that close.

Yes, there’s a very good chance that the puppies would be abnormal. Breeding with a close relative greatly increases the likelihood of defective genes to be passed on to the offspring.

    Nothing “happens”…w/humans OR other animals.
That granny tale to keep your brother away from you is bogus.

    IN-& LINE-breeding is HOW ***ALL*** PUREBRED animals…every species …..were developed & refined.
    PLANTS TOO!
    PROS know WTF they’re doing….nitwits don’t.

Um sweetie I think it doesn’t work like humans. Funny cuz I just asked a friend the same question yesterday… about cats tho. But you know animals are like humans in a way. They communicate (in their language) lol. I don’t think it really matterz!

  8. Payton Says:

With wolves, foxes, and coyotes, it takes about five generations of inbreeding before offspring are mentally/physically retarded. In humans, it sometimes only takes one generation.

I imagine that, since it takes wolves, foxes and coyotes five generations, it would take dogs about the same.

I have a dog that is the product of a brother/sister mating (not my choice, but she is a great dog), and she seems in perfect health.

well, any genetic qualities good and bad would be magnified in the puppies, so if the mom is prone to hip displaysia, heart problems or temperament issues and you breed her with a son or a littermate then the liklihood for those issues coming to the surface are very high. linebreeding should only be done by experienced breeders who are 100% sure of the genetics they are working with.
