There are several different breeds of retrievers (Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Flat-Coat Retrievers, Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retrievers, Curly Coated Retrievers), although I've only owned regular old golden retrievers, so I couldn't tell you what the other breeds are like. If you find a breeder of one of those breeds in your area, see if you can meet the adult dogs and evaluate their personality. I love goldens.
