What Breed of dog should i get with these characteristics?

Loyalty, Incredibly intelligent, Strong and athletic, A amazing guard dog one that could be taught to be a police dog like in the show Kats and Dog. I just want to be able to teach him to protect the family if he has to but be friendly.

A labrador retriever has all that you’re looking for & more. Just know that you must have room for he or she to run - a large fenced yard. crabcake

There are plenty of breeds that fit that description but please keep in mind that to get a true guard dog it requires so pricey training. A certified protection dog knows when to bark and when to bite and will always listen to your commands. It will know when you say let go to let go without hesitation. But for the most part any dog will protect the family on its own. Dont make a dangerous dog. APBT4Good

I’d say a Boxer, ChowChow, Lab, or German Shepherd. They are all amazing breeds. Just please remember: bad dogs aren’t born, they’re made. chaychayolei

I would say a German Shepherd. They’re strong, loyal, and smart. They are also easy to train and great guard dogs.
You could also consider a mastiff or a rottweiler. Ted (Guitar Legend)

If you don’t know much about dog breeds, I can’t help but question your ability to handle a dog like that. Make sure you read up on this, and perhaps take a class on training your dog. If you don’t do it just right, you’ll either end up with a really nice, but horrible guard dog; or a dog you won’t feel safe keeping around your family. Ultimately which dog you get doesn’t matter. What matters is YOUR ability to properly understand, train, and manage the dog. Good luck! Mr. Taco

Australian Cattle Dog! I have two! The are super smart and loyal…the are very protective of their home and owners. I have had one for 6 years and we now have a puppy that’s 7 months old. The are very energetic and also love to hike/run/play! I would check out cattledog.com
I hope you give it some serious thought. My dogs are the best dogs I have ever had and wouldn’t change them for the world!
I have had German Shepards and Yorkies and I’d say that the cattle dog has everything you may be looking for. German Shepards are super loyal too and obviously are great guard dogs…(being that they are used for police dogs)

I would have to say a Heeler very loyal and very smart and they dont take any training to be guard dogs. One thing about them is they dont bark alot cause they dont want you do know they are there. Great dogs to guard you truck ( wont let anyone steal anything without losing a hand. marcey m

Any dog, if trained right, will be loyal and protective of it’s master and family. However, if you are looking for size, i would say a lab. Also, my friend has a doberman and he’s a big teddy bear to her son but he would definitely scare off some strangers.

There are plenty of dogs with those characteristics, however The most important thing is to get good advise, and a good dog trainer. They may even be able to advise you better on a breeder. The most important thing is to establish dominance as the alpha, and teach your puppy from an early age to have manners. You need to take into consideration, how much time you can devote to your dog and what kind of place you live in, in the country? or in a big city high rise apartment? Big yard or no yard? etc… Reseach your breed, and also know that it is a life long commitment, so choose wisely. catsmeow150

Loyalty comes with being fair. By intelligent do you mean one that is easy to train or what? Bloodhounds are intelligent when it comes to scent work but can be rather difficult to train in other areas that it really has no instinct in…like herding.
A true protection dog doesn’t have to be taught to be protective, it should already be there. The only reason a “protection” dog goes through training is to hone this instinct. The LAST thing you want is an unpredictable personal protection dog that has no obedience training! Boxers are great, I have a female Australian Boxer (Cattle Dog) and she always seems to amaze me. Size has nothing to do with what you want, it’s mainly how you care and train you pet, they won’t forget the dedication and will always be there for you. She’s everything you’re looking for but more. Except for the guard dog part.. maybe a pit bull. They WILL protect your family if they sense something is wrong.. you won’t have to train them that!! However, Mine only bark at the door.. I doubt they would attack an intruder unless they hurt me. THen, it’s on!! My young male has begun schutzhund training, and I tell you, it’s working against their nature as people loving dogs, so it takes a special trainer and handler combo to undertake the task! I also do weight pulling with my 2, and I have a dog-cart that they pull me in regularly. They are both really smart and loyal to their family as well. The only thing I can say is to try and rescue one from the pound, and if not, then find a reputable breeder who encourages good temp. in their breedings!! Make sure you meet BOTH parents of the dogs! (regardless of the breed!) crazychica4405

These chartacteristics describe several dog breeds. Doberman Pincher, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, and Rottie if you are looking for easy to train. Several other breeds fit the description but they are more stuborn. As far as family protection what you what is not a guard dog (guard dogs guard property) what you want is a protection dog. However unless you have a specific reason to need an acutal trained protection dog I wouldn’t reccomend one. With the exception of the Lab all of the above breeds have been breed to some extent for there protective instincets and don’t requrie training to protect there family. If raised and they are raised and trained in a responsble manner they will be safe dependible dogs who will defend there family if necessary and are no where near the liability of a trained protection dog. T.v. dogs do not = reality . You describe a German Shepard or chow . The way you post your question I don’t think you understand what your role is as a potential dog owner. Loyalty is earned. Athleticism is conditioned. Intelligence is encouraged. You seem to want everything without understanding that your dog becomes what you have to put into it. For example; The chiuaua that took the rattle snake out for his two year old last year (athlete?) .The heeler that stuck by the broken hip old lady to fight off the 250 lb. gator in Florida (loyal?). But my favourite was the shepard that dragged a woman he didn’t know from her ravine wrecked car to the hi way and waited with her until help came.(intelligent) All dogs have potential. If you have what it takes the cross bred from the pound can be your dream dog. If your just dreaming then wonder dog would be a bag of bones.

I own & breed Australian Shepherds. They are AWSOME dogs. They have all the characteristics you are looking for & More!!!! They are very protective of their family. I own horses, other dogs, chickens,a cat & they get along with them all. I exposed them as puppies.
A Clumber Spaniel are great dogs. Good with the family. Not a dog you see often. But great all around dogs. My grandpa owned a few of them.
Miniature Bull Terrier. Nothing like a Terrier!! They are truly GREAT family dogs, can be very protective!!! They are dam smart!!!! Very good dogs!! I have owned 4 of them in my life. They were my grandmas fav dogs.
