What brand of dry dog food is healthy for a dog that I don’t have to buy online or pay a fortune for?

I am planning on getting a new dog in the near future and was wondering what is the best dry dog food that doesn’t cost too much and is actually good for the dog without too many fillers. I am specifically talking about supermarket and pet store brands so I can find them easily.

Let your dog go outside and find his own food - he knows where the food are so stop fretting. People sometimes think too much for some dumb animals. Preicox

Iams is pretty good and most grocery stores carry it. The best brands are Science Diet and Nutro, but they are only in pet food stores like petco and they are a little pricey. princess4fun7_24

I prefer Natures recipe, it is not to much but a bit much for some. I consider what it has and for me, it is the cheapest food that has no corn or wheat in it. But for what your looking for, Iams is pretty good. at least the first 2 ingredients are not corn. the 3rd is though. But, considering what else is there, that is your best bet. Good luck melissa s

Sorry, but nothing from a supermarket will ever be good. You can find a few good brands from some pet stores - Wellness and Blue Buffalo are sold in some big pet stores.

Check here to see how most brands rate:

Aim for something with at least 5 stars. Remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to dog food, and though better foods ma seem pricey at first, because they are more nutritionally dense, you will actually need to feed less, and you will save on vet bills in the future. Good luck. allycmw

wellness, canidae, blue buffalo. Dogs are expensive, and their food is not cheap.

Also to princess: The brands you listed are crap in a bag. Shadowed Wings

Look at the ingredients on the bag, look for Meat, as the main ingredients, not chicken meal or anything else, if it says chicken or beef that is what it is. chathamguy

i guess it depends on what size dog you’re getting. if you get a big dog such as a lab you will need to get a lot of dog food a month, probably 60 dollars worth or more. if you get a small dog such as a chihuahua its much cheaper. kibbles n bits is healthy and is very cheap for a small dog sized bag, for my dog i get an 8lb bag for 4.50 and it lasts me almost 3 weeks. walmart is probably the cheapest place for dog food.. so next time you are there shopping check out the pet department for prices. the Ol’ Roy brand is pretty decently priced. Good luck with your new pup :) L A

I use “taste of the wild”

this is the best dog food analysis site.
it will tell you which ones are good and which ones are not so good and why. look at it and pick the best one you can find and afford. froghugger

Probably the best combination of low cost and decent quality will be the Kirkland brand from Costco. Dogzzz

Nature’s recipe- at pet stores. Great food at a good price. Also- I discovered Exceed at sam’s club. Fantastic price and it has real chicken (not by products) as the first ingredient. Any brand you pick- just look at the ingredients. Any of the first ingredients 3 that have “meal” in it are not a good sign. Kim

Look at dogfoodanalysis.com and pick something rated high. No corn, No by products.

What I would suggest that is good and affordable is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. Marie P

Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams all junk. Be careful on who or where you get your info from. if your going to get a dog now is the time to think about if you can really afford one. Feeding a large dog good food is going to cost between $50 and $60 bucks a month. No corn, no soy, no perservatives. no meal! If it was me I would do my research on my own. I’m feeding Wellness! I can’t believe what some people think is good food! cudalovesme
