Dogs and Puppies

I would like to get a canine that serves multiple purposes. I would like it to protect my family and home. I also have milk goats and I would like it to be able herd them in from the field. It should be a breed which is a good pulling dog for helping transfer the milk, bottled and in a cart, from the barn to the home. Finally I will take the dog hunting and have him gaurd the camp while I’m out in the field. . . it will not participate in the actual task of hunting. It should also be good with young children as we have a 3 year old granddaughter. Can I find a well rounded dog breed that can meet these requirements in one dog? If so, which one and if one sex is prefered over another, which would be better.

We recently lost our Airedale, Piper, to cancer. We would like to get another dog soon. We are open to adopting a shelter dog, or getting a purebreed. We have 3 sons, ages, 6, 4, and 8 mos. We have lots of experience training dogs and would like a breed that is of medium size under 50 lbs, smart, friendly yet protective, and not of intense energy. We give our dogs a daily walk and have a partially fenced but small yard. What breed should we look into?

I am looking to buy a dog but cant seem to chose one. I am wanting everyones opinion on what kind of dog do they think will be the best for my family. I have two children. Ages 5 and 2. I own my own home and have a big back yard although its not fenced. I am also a stay at home mother so the dog will get plenty attention. What will be the best dog for my family? Small dog or Big. I dont care, as long as it will be a great dog.

The dog would be alone for maybe about 4-5 hours a day, so I want a breed that doesn’t bark that much and would annoy the neighbors while I’m gone. I also want a dog that isn’t too active but not too lazy (medium activity) and medium sized. Suggestions? Any stories from experience? What dogs would you NOT recommend for this situation?
