I have a minpin. He is very protective (my parents have nicknamed him "Cujo" No, he has never bitten anyone.)!!! But, once he knows that a stranger is ok, he's fine and becomes a very lovable friend. He only barks to alert you or let you know that he wants something, and is an excellent watchdog. He is very, very loving and very friendly companion. I would definitely look into getting a minpin. He is only 12 lbs. but thinks that he is 100 lbs and thinks that his main job in life is to protect me. I have a friend that has one that is litter trained. So if you are in an apartment that would be an option. http://www.resumeminers.com/First-Job-Guide.htm

Try mini-dachshunds. I have two and lived in a town house. Mini dachshunds are great for small homes or apartments. They need very little exercise and are so small they can be in your lap all of the time. They will weigh from 6-11 lbs.. Also, if you choose a short hair, grooming is almost eliminated and you don't have hair everywhere.
They are wary of strangers and will need to be socialized and walked when they are little. If they aren't, they will bark at strangers when they are older.
I would steer away from chihuahuas. My family members have them. They are very one person dogs. They will bark at everyone except the one person they decide is their master.
Good luck with your decision. http://www.supersportsstore.com/alpine-skiing-7768

Chiwuaha (may bark though)
Bishion Frise/Poodle mix (ADORABLE!!!!)
Bishion Frise
Toy Poodles (not very friendly though....)
Pomeranian (i dont' know anything about them)
Cairn (if that's how you spell it)

there's a lot of choices. Get a dog book. IT REALLY HELPS!!! http://www.qualitylawnmower.com/riding-lawn-mower-review.htm

Corgi is good but all mine barked at the wind.

Had a lot of people tell me they loved the traits of their Min Pin's, friendly but warning to strangers.

Otherwise try a Jack Russell. http://www.greattoolsusa.com/routers-4346

I am partial to a cocker spaniel. They have a big dog personailty in a little body. But be careful some can get to be more medium sized. I have a 17 pound female and a 33 lb male! But he is a doll and although we are out a lot he would be OK as an apt dog:) http://www.prohomeschool.com/homeschool-schooled-traffic.htm

Try a corgie. They're super-sweet and lovable. Beagles are great too but they like to talk. Any puppy is going to whine/bark at first until it gets used to its surroundings. http://www.eyeprocedure.com/laser-eye-surgery.htm
