When you first get a dog (especially a puppy) it needs to be taken to the vet to make sure it's up-to-date on its shots, spayed/neutered, and you need to buy flea/tick and heartworm medication. These meds are given monthly, and cost about $50 for a three month supply. You also need to buy good food, a crate, toys, and other supplies to care for your dog. What are you going to do if the dog gets sick? Needs emergency medical attention? My dad's dog recently needed to go to an emergency vet, and the bottom price for their care was $1,000. Please take all of this into consideration before you buy a dog. The shelters are filled with animals who were taken into a home that didn't know the cost of owning a pet.
