We clean up after them every time after they potty in the garage and even spray a deterrent so they’re aren’t suppose to pee on it again. We have two dogs a male and a female. They don’t pee in the house and we constantly take them outside so they are potty trained.

They don’t consider the garage as ‘indoors’ so it’s fair game most likely. Can you set down some old carpeting in there? They may consider it ‘indoors’ then.

Are the cages too big? The cages are only suposed to be as big as the dogs, enough to turn around and lay in, but if its too big they will just use one corner of the cage as a bathroom.

how long are you leaving them in the kennels? And are they pooping as soon as they get in the kennels? Cause if they are they think its okay to. Start feeding them in the kennels, usually that will help. It helped with my new puppy. We just started to drop her food in the floor if the kennel. And after 2 days she stopped peeing in there.

Why are they in the garage in the 1st place……..if they are housebroken, let them live in the house.

maybe your dog is in the kennel to long. Have you thought about weaning them away from the kennel period and just making them house dogs.

    Hi there,

I’m kinda wondering like the rest of the answers here? Why are they even in the cage in a garage? Do you have a backyard with grass where they can roam around freely and poop and pee as they need?

I’m sure if you work during the day, (assuming you have a back yard), that a doggie door would be a nice addition to allow them more freedom and heck, when they gotta poop and pee, they can do their business outside. Sounds like your westies are older and they are not dummies and they “could be” letting you know that they don’t appreciate being caged like that all the time? My two westies are boys, and very very smart. One is 2 the other is 3. Hell, they have been out of the cage since they were 11 months now. Not one time I had any problems, they even let me know they have to pee and poop by standing by the doors and scratching on it (that’s before we had a doggie door).

I’d say, give your Westies a little more credit than you give them. They are intelligent and smart dogs. Enough to know the difference of being treated fairly and not given the opportunity to hang out with you and the family as they should be part of the family pack right? Give them more room to be comfortable as “you would want to be”. I couldn’t imagine keeping my westies in a garage? In a cage too? Come on now, think about it…would YOU want to be locked up frequently and expected to hold your pee and poop until some human come and let you out a cage? Just think about it.

Try it for a couple of days, let them be free to roam…show them the door where they should go out to do their business if you have too! Don’t just treat them like caged animals and only come out for feedings and occassional walks (if any?). What else is there a dog to do other than peep and poop in a cage?

    Take Care,

    D.

You said you are keeping them in a kennel? Do you mean just the garage with room to all access or do you have a large kennel where they basically rest and have their water/food in? Because garage access isn’t really a kennel. It’s like having them outside in the back yard, they’ll pee and poop out there too and still run around :)
Try putting some news papers down in opposite corners. Then you may have to get a leesh and tie them up close to their news papers while you guys are home. But only until you noticed they have went to the bathroom on them. THen unleash them and reward them with treats and hugs and kisses. Do that a few times, supervised meaing not for to long but until they go pottie then be sure and reward them. They’ll get hint :) Dogs just love positive attention and when they realize they are pleasing you, they’ll be happy to use the news papers. But with them unsupervised in the garage (and you didn’t say for how long) but they probably know you guys are inside and are lonely and not feeling safe. Put 2 doggie beds with a towl or blanket so they have their own little cosey place to actually relax in the garage. put their food and water there too. Are they in the dark the whole time or are their windows? Dogs don’t like being in the dark all the time. They are peeing in the garage bc they are scared. Again it might help if you could indicate how often (daily? nightly? half a day, etc) and for how long (hours?) you put them in the garage.

If you do have an actually kennel that they are lying again, again indicate how long they have to be inside of it. And is the garage dark, etc.
