When my dog had puppies, I called the vet to ask when to bring the pups in and he said they didnt need to come in unless I felt there was something wrong with them, and the y were ok til they had to get shots

#1: Its always good to have a vet on hand or nearby when your are expecting the litter soon. Just in case there is a complication or something you are not quite sure how to handle.

#2: The sooner the better! If you are planning on selling these pups you want to make sure (especially if they are from a good line) they are in extra good health and that the medical records start as early as possible to prove you have done due diligence. But you want to make sure your purebred or mutt (mixed breed) get the best of care.

#3: The pups AND the mama need to get looked at. The condition of the MAMA is super important during and after the pregnancy as any deficiency in her diet and health will impact the pups!

#4: This obviously your first time breeding so I would try to make sure you get a vet on the scene, and if that proves to be difficult/impossible (and not because you are too cheap...), try getting one hell of good intro from your vet on what is normal, what is to be expected, what can happen, is cause for concern, is an emergency & how to deal with all the variables. You could also try to get an expert breeder 'on your staff' to help. But the vet needs to be involved preferably throughout the pregnancy!

Either way your vet can assist you. Seek help & knowledge now!

I would think within the next 24 hrs , the vet needs to check out the pups and the mom , so maybe if you heave a nice vet he can make a house call instead of you dragging everyone there .
good luck

Go asap! puppies can have defects. you need to get them checked. Have the mother checked too. She could have a problem.

When I was breeding, I never took healthy puppies to the vet until they needed their first shots. I would have only taken a puppy to the vet if there was any type of problem with it. The mom, however, always went within 48 hours of whelping.
