How long does my female need to stay with her puppies at night?

puppies
Brandy H asked:

I have a Dachshund who now has five puppies that are four weeks old. We have moved them into a new room with a larger caged area. Our female does not like staying in the cage with them at night, but since she is in another room we cannot hear here whine to go to the bathroom. Our room is too small to have the puppies cage in there, so does she need to stay with them at night?

Mom should be with her puppies “still” in a safe place with enough room….. They are only 4 weeks old, and it is too soon to have them completely separated all night. It’s also a little too soon for weaning. If none of this is possible, then there is no other choice than to do what you have to do. At least she will be with them early in the morning until latest at nite before retiring, right? Again, they will be ready to wean very soon. lkb

If your dachshund is old enough to have puppies, she’s old enough to go all night without having to go to the bathroom. Her whining is because she wants attention.

If you are giving her good walks during the day - especially in the evening, she should have no reason to have to go out during the night. If the caged area fits her and the pups, she wont urinate in it.

Yes, she should stay with the puppies at night. At four weeks of age, the puppies need her a good deal of the time. She can be let out several times during the day (a long morning walk, a couple of times during the day to play, and then a long evening walk), and she should urinate and defecate during those times. If she doesn’t do it now, she will before very long, because she’ll figure out that she’s not going to be let out at night.

If, on the other hand, you can’t handle not letting her out at night, get a baby monitor. You can put that on top of or near the caged area and set up the receiver in your room - that way you’ll hear her at night.

    Good luck! Apacapacas

Pups are getting older and mom is wanting a little rest on her own. You need to set up a space she can get in and out of. She doesn’t need to be with her pups 24/7 now that they’re older. At 4 weeks, they’re loud, playing and annoying to mom. They should also be given softened puppy food about now, as mom will start the weaning process, part of which is not spending all her time with them. april

no but young puppies usually enjoy the warmth of there mother

do you have a kennel for your dachshund because if you do you could line the floor with fleece rug and they all could go in there insted of being cramped in a small cage

    hope it helps!

p.s when they are about 8 weeks they can be seperated at night dogs_rule2497

Ideally you should have a whelping box, which will have 3 full height sides and one with a dip in the middle so mum can get in and out but the pups cannot. MaybeBaby?
