How long do puppies stay with their mothers?

puppies
Fufufu asked:

I know it’s usually 8-12 weeks old for the puppies to leave mom and be sold.

But if puppies were never sold, how long do they stay with mom? What age will mom make her puppies leave her?

it’s actually 7-8 weeks that they’re old enough to leave but i’m assuming they would just stay with her forever cuz the bond does grow stronger.

  2. zgzig Says:

8 to 15 weeks! The mother will get tired of them bugging her and she will go back to normal, just like she has never had pups.

  3. Just Sam Says:

Actually she’ll force them to ween after they get their teeth, about 12 weeks or so but they will stay in a pack type relationship rather than a mother/puppies relationship.

the mother wont make her pups leave her but becarefull if your keeping a male one he will breed with the mother is shes not been done.

If they stay with the mother for good the only thing she will do is when they have thier teeth she will nip them for trying to feed from her she will put a stop to that.

If your female dog has puppies and you decide to keep one (or more) as pets, the mother won’t make them leave.

My daughter’s friend has a mother dog who is almost 12 and her “baby” who is 10. The mother still seems to look out for her “baby” - funny to see!

puppies can leave their mothers at 8 weeks old. if they arent sold, they can just live with their moms. the mom won’t make them leave her.

Let’s just discuss feral dogs and wolves. Most pups begin weaning around 4 to 5 weeks, as the puppies are getting their little teeth, but it can last longer. As they begin weaning from milk, the mother will regurgitate food for them to eat. Soon this is all they will eat (other pack members often chip in too; this is why puppies lick adults’ mouths, they are hoping for some leftovers!). As the pups age, adult dogs will bring the pups to kills, or bring dead or nearly-dead game back to their den for the pups to eat/kill/play with. Around the age of 9 months, pups can join the hunt for themselves.

So really, if left to their own devices, mother dogs don’t really get rid of their puppies; the pups are usually just incorporated into the pack.

She won’t make them leave if she is a normally socialized dog. Of course, you wouldn’t have allowed her to breed if she had any temperament issues. Mom and offspring will become a multi-dog household.
If you’re thinking what would a dog in the wild do, well, the domestic dog is not found in the wild.

  9. Trisha S Says:

Eight weeks of age has long been accepted as the optimal time to acquire a new pup. By eight weeks, sufficient dog-dog socialization has taken place with mother and litter mates to tide the puppy over until he is old enough to safely meet and play with other dogs in puppy class and dog parks. Yet the puppy is still young enough to form a strong bond with the members of his new family.

The mother won’t make the puppies leave, their bond will grow stronger, and they will actually be inseparable. I had a dog that had one puppy, when she died, her daughter died 2 weeks later of a broken heart.

    Hi Fufufu,
If the puppies were not sold and you decide to keep them,Mommy won’t make her puppies go..She will not let them nurse on her when they get their teeth and start hurting Mom..That’s a nature thing for Mommy to do..
You will have Mommy dog looking after her puppies when they are 6 and up..Mommy always protect their Kids..Human or Animals,it doesn’t matter!!! Motherhood kicks in.. But If you can’t sale the puppies,I would find them good homes to go to..
