How do I stop my dog from pulling on leash when sees another dog?

My dog walks fine on leash until he sees another dog, then he just wants to go over to them. He is not aggressive, he just wants to meet and play with the other dog. He’s getting to be really strong, and it’s getting harder and harder for me to control him. How do I stop him from pulling when he sees another dog?

get a “leader” leash so he can;’t pull on the leash and won’t choke him when he pulls. bertie

what I do is get in front of my dog and say “NO” really assertively and she is usually good for the afternoon, and when she walks by other dogs and ignores them you give them a treat right away.
I don’t have a collar on my dog I have a harness so she has much better control with her body.
I have a pit-bull puppy 17 months and she is a hand full, but it will get better.

Maybe if you can afford it take your dog to obedience school. They have the most knowledge about this…you could also try to get a book on dog training and see what the professionals do. Lanie

Dogs have a pack mentality and you need to impose as the alpha male of your herd. When you walk past another dog do not look at the dog. Don’t even acknowledge it. Just be assertive and walk past it. And if your dog is pulling its leash you have to just keep the dog in his place and be as dominant as you can.
A dog without a pack leader is just as badly treated as if you where to hit the dog. Hush P

You need to show the dog that you are in charge. You are the Alpha dog, by pushing the dog down so it rolls on its back and GENTLY grab it by the scruff of the neck and speak loudly telling he/she NO!!! This will establish you as the “pack” leader of the “wolves” and he/she should understand after a couple times that this will not be tolerated. Lee H

My dog has this ting called a gentle leader. It’s not a muzzle, but when the dog goes running, The Gentle leader gently pulls back on the dogs nose and he won’t pull as hard. IT also helps to walk the dog so that he is walking next to you, and it helps him become more obedient. Katy

what you do is take a bottle of water with a lid like this with you
then whenever your dog pulls squirt him with the water
it really does work, believe me i have 2 dogs who went mental when another dog passed.
you could also get a harness, it goes like under their legs, so when the start to pull, you can just give the leash a gentle tug and it will pull them back.

Try using a harness. It goes around the chest and back and doesn’t choke the dog. I would pull/tug it a little bit, and it ill pull him away, and he will think, ‘Hmm, mommy doesn’t like me to play with other dogs. I should stop that..’ Mackenzie R

My dog does this too. He just wants to meet the other dog. Unless the owner lets their dog come over and say hello, he’ll keep on doing this. You can yell at him, or scold him harshly, but there’s nothing much else you can do. Sarah

Firmly tell him no, right as he starts to pull. Maybe try a harness, for better control. Bring along treats, and when he walks past a dog without pulling towards it, give him one, and praise him well!

So, try to find a friend that has a dog to help train yours.
What you do is go to a field or strech of park sidewalk and have the other dog just sit. (Make sure this dog is calm with other dogs…) You stand with your dog quite a ways away. (But you can still see the other dog)
Then you slowly walk your dog toward the other dog. When you see the pulling behavior, turn around and go back to where you started. Have your dog sit and stay until he is calm. Keep doing this until you can get to the other dog without him pulling. Let them sniff noses and stuff, but then move on. Practice this several times once he gets the idea, and with different dogs. You could even try more than one other dog.
This takes time and patience, maybe more than one day because your dog could get frustrated.

Good lord the first couple of answers are horrible.
I advise getting a Halti-Head collar. It prevents all pulling, and gives you the ability to force him next to you (heel) and keeps him in a comfortable distance.
When you get the halti, walk in the direction of another dog. If he starts to lunge, turn and walk the other way. Do this again and again and again. He’ll be completely unable to pull. Patient Paws

I was going to say what Patient Paws said.
We have a Halti Head collar for our dog it really works (They cost quite a bit though) He did the same as your dog, but now with the halti we have more control over him. Also when walking look out for other dogs and when you spot one distract him. or tell him no every time he starts whining or barking.

get a choke collar, i like the snake chain ones the best. or a chain martingale(only on their neck) but when he is walking then starts to pull say “NO-NO” or”ahh ahh” a sharp quick and loud noise will work. then turn quickly and walk the other way. Nature Girl
