How do I get my puppies to last through the night?
I’m crate training and everything seems to be going smoothly until nighttime. I have two puppies almost 4 mos. Every 3-4 hours I have been getting up and bringing them downstairs (separatly) to go potty. (12:30, 3:30, and we are up for the day at 5:30am) This is beginning to wear me out. If I ignore it they cry and howl for more than 40 minutes and I can’t stand it. Aren’t I getting them into the habit of going every 3-4 hours and how do I lengthen that time?

You have to learn to ignore the howling for a few nights. They do not really need to go that often. They are learning that the howling gets them the attention they want. In a way they are controlling you. If your pups are not crated together at night try that. Another thing you can try(I do this at times) is to try covering their crate to where they are completely in the dark. You can also try putting a few of their favorite toys in with them.

They will increase their hold time one hour per month of age according to my trainer. My pup is now seven months and it seems to hold true.

You’ve gotten them used to you coming after them when they wake. You have to ignore the crying and howling, though it is hard. If you leave them alone they will get the picture eventually and realize that night time is sleep time and that you aren’t going to get up and come to them everytime they cry.
Good luck

Hi…I have a 3 month old puppy who sleeps through the night! No food or water after 7pm. The last time I let my pup out is about 10-10:30 and she sleeps till 7am. Obviously if you let her out later, then she should sleep later. Yes, your pups are going to cry and bark but after a few days they will stop b/c they know you are NOT going to take them out. If they cry and howl and you give in to them, they know to continue b/c they get what they want. Your pups need to work around you, you do not work around them. Stay tough (as hard as it is) and I can pretty much guarantee it will work! Good Luck-
