How do dogs know the difference between adults and kids?

How do dogs know the difference between adults and kids? I have seen dogs tolerate and continue to play with a child even after the child (baby) tugged on them. If an adult did this, then they would risk being bitten by the dog.

Generally children act differently, they are smaller and they have a bit of a different smell. Skipper ~ 1st In MMA Tourney!

They dont know logically speaking. But they can sense the difference between different people, children, men or women, etc. Dogs are far from dumb! stephen

I think most well-trained dogs would know to be gentle with kids, but even well-mannered dogs can snap at a child if they hurt the dog. BC love

I think dogs like that kids are smaller. My dog *loves* kids and inherently tolerates any kind of shoving, fur-pulling, etc. so she always deals with kids’ shenanigans. A lot of dogs also jump up on people, so the small stature helps them greet people without the jumping. Pepe Silvia

dogs have a sense of the pecking order knowing an adult as an alpha and a baby as a harmless runt Frank F

When a kid does stuff like that it is considered play full and all because they are smaller, have a slight different smell and usually are eye level making the dog feel even or dominant towards the child. When an adult does something like that, the dog is more cautious towards it because an adult is so much taller and has a stronger smell telling the dog that they are not able to give their own smell to the adult by rubbing on them or stuff like that because the adults smell is already strong enough. beardeddragonQanswers
