How can I train my dog to make friends with others?

Laura L asked:

My dog is a miniature pinscher, and he can never get along with other dogs. I mean, the moment he sees other dogs, he starts barking like crazy! What’s worse, when he gets near to the other dog, he starts attacking it. Is there a way to teach my dog not to be so mean? If so, how?

I suggest bringing him around calm dogs much larger than himself. Make sure that they are dogs that wont get angry if your dog starts to annoy them. You need at least two in order to intimidate your dog and when he realizes the other dogs aren’t going to attack him he should calm down and begin to socialize with them.

*Your best bet would be to get a qualified behavior specialist for your dog so nothing “bad” happens Ashley W

Is your dog a puppy? If so it’ll be a lot easier to train him to get along with other dogs. He seems like a very unbalanced dog. If you have the $$ you should probably get some professional training. I put my dogs through a training agency called Bark Busters. It was very effective but pricey.

Make sure you are giving your dog plenty of exercise and make sure he knows you are the boss. A good tool that I learned to use with my dogs is a water bottle. When they are doing something they shouldn’t, I make a loud verbal sound to get their attention and if they don’t respond, I squirt them. Its harmless but effective. Eventually they learn that the sound means they are doing what they shouldn’t be doing. I also use clapping and snapping to put them in line.

If you have a friend or someone you know with a dog, you can try introducing them slowly, with a squirtbottle in hand, until your dog calms down enough to learn how to meet another dog.

sorry for the longwinded answer. h_zapa

You need to understand how counter conditioning and desensitization work. You want your dog to associate good things with other dogs. Your dog is afraid of uncomfortable around other dogs.
