How can I prevent my dogs from barking when they are left alone?

ROBIN E asked:

When we leave the house our two dogs begin barking. We are very concerned as although our neighbour is understanding we believe it is driving her mad! She is an elderly woman and a pet lover but she has been ill and needs some peace. We love our dogs and wouldn’t consider losing them. Any suggestions would be welcome.

get a bark collar. not one of the cruel ones that shocks them. they make ones that spray water in the dogs face

get a dog whisperer, or leave it alone when it barks for attention and they may learn!

This may seem weird but we leave the TV on. It really helps my dog feel like there is someone else there. You could also get them one of those shock collars for when they bark. But I would never consider that myself. But I guess if its really bad you could.

when they start barking open the door shout no and squirt them with water.they will soon get the message

I agree with Bob - a bark collar which sprays lemony water at their faces every time they bark will soon put them off with no harm being done to the dogs.

make sure they have got plently of toys to play with and keep them occupied.

give them a chew stick each and make sure they have some toys

+1 to the TV on, I know it wastes electriity but your dog is most likely barking due to loneliness or lack of attention. Bark collars should only be used as a a last resort. If you are going to get one, try a collar that sprays never shocks. NEVER USE A MUZZLE, they are cruel and have no place with any animal you care about.

give your dogs more exercise…they are bored…dogs that are tired do not waste more energy barking.
