How can I get my dog to be more friendly around other dogs?

David M asked:

I have a 1 1/2 year old chihuahua/terrier mix. He gets really nervous and scared around other dogs his size. Now he is fine at home with my other dog who is his size, but not stranger dogs. I take him to the local dog park to try to get him used to other dogs but he still seems scared and is very shy and nervous around other dogs. What can I do?

Have him meet other dogs but instead of random, new dogs everytime have him continue to meet a specific few until he becomes comfortable with them. Then I would switch the set with a new set of dogs and repeat until he gets used to being around other dogs.

Pretty much, just get him out and about meeting lots of different dogs in lots of different situations. Be consistent though. If you’re consistent on taking him out to meet new dogs, he’ll eventually learn that there’s nothing to worry about. (We had a puppy who was really nervous around other dogs too. He just needed some socialization!)
