Dogs-males or females show dominance to other members of the pack and community in many different ways. One of these ways is by lifing one of the legs when he/she urinates.
It is to show who is boss, and that whatever it is that he/she peed on is "their land".

Another thing you may notice (if you have two dogs) is that often one will stand over the other-that is another sign of dominance and "ownership" that one dog has over another dog.

Don't be fooled-both males AND females will lift their leg-it all depends on who's the ALPHA (boss). Reggie's Bud

um, some females will lift their legs! My female does her best to hike her leg up on things to mark! She's more likely lift her leg and mark than my male is!

Its all about marking.. its a way dogs communicate.. kinda like a message board. There's more to it than "this is mine.." Dogs also communicate their dominancy, their sex, and also a female lets everyone know where she is at in her eustrus cycle. A female in heat may mark something to say "Available lady here".. a male may come along and leave his own lil message to say "Hey baby" nekkiddoglady

They do this as marking behavior- males marking their territory. Females don't do this, only males. Females squat when they pee, or at least our Shiba Inu does. dottye7777

Damn. Male dogs do it to mark territory, the higher you get your scent, the better, longer it will be for your status as a male dog.
Tom, I see you are develping a sense of humor. The ML getting to you? greekman
