If the dog is free roaming, call animal control to pick the dog up… b.w.

Call animal control and file a report. If you do not have one in your area, call the police and file a complaint. As much as you may want to, do not get rid of the dog yourself. Eventually, you will get caught and it really will not solve the problem as your neighbor will just go out and get another dog and you will be right back in the same problem that you have now. bluemysti

like the previous answer, call animal control.
if the dog tries to attack you, carry pepper spray. no long lasting effects and works on most dogs.
don’t harm the dog because of the stupid, ignorant owner.
if animal control or the police don’t come, file a complaint with your city. most have laws about aggressive dogs and dogs at large. a complaint might get their attention. Dani42379

You can report the dog to animal control anonymously, but it won’t carry the weight of an unmasked call. AC gets dozens of pranks and false reports every day and they don’t always take anonymous calls seriously.
Here’s the tough love, you have to be an adult and tell your neighbor that the dog is bothering you. Tell him you’re going to call animal control if you see it off leash again, and that you’ll be contacting an attorney if it attacks you again. If he still refuses to be a responsible pet owner, then follow through on the threat. You can’t go through life anonymously. Seattle_Slacker

Like in so many cases, it seems that your AH neighbor should be neutered.
Good luck and don’t take it on the dog.
It’s not his fault. Rahaaa

Well by law the neighbor should have the dog on a leash. IF in fact the dog is really aggressive then you should call your local dog warden..now if it’s really just a problem with your neighbor not controlling his dog then you handle it accordingly with him. While some dogs seem to be aggressive when they come towards you .in fact they’re not.
If you’re timid or afraid of dogs they sense that as well. I can’t imagine this neighbor leaves his dog outside all day and night without an enclosed area for him. If you don’t feel comfortable walking up to your neighbors door and informing him unless he starts keeping his dog on a leash you will take further action as in calling the dog warden then send him a certified letter letting him know what your plans are.
Remember something… there aren’t bad dogs just bad owners. Try the certified letter and see if that helps you. IF things dont change call your local dog warden. Grace

Well it looks like everyone has the same answer to call animal control. If next the dog attacks you and AC hasnt come yet I think you have every right to hit the dog since youre protecting yourself. pistonsfan81

I wouldn’t get rid of the dog.. just teach it and your neighbor a lesson. Use what postal workers, meter readers, and delivery personnel use - mace.
When the dog runs at you to attack you (make sure you’re up wind) spray the dog with mace. It won’t kill the dog, nor cause any life threatening injuries. If your neighbor gets in your face about it simply tell him “if the dog would have attacked you, you could press charges and have him arrested”. Keeping a dog off leash violates the leash law. An aggressive dog is a weapon and in court it can be prosecuted as such - assault with a deadly weapon.

Tell the police, animal control, or whatever that the dog tried to bite you. Just missed, but the dog definitely tried.
Usually that gets people’s attention. Dogjudge

I agree that mace is probably the only other thing. We had two aggressive dogs down the street, they never bit anyone, but animal control picked them up over and over again. I called and ask animal control why they keep getting them back. They told me, as long as the owners come and pay the fine to get them out of jail, they had to give them back. I don’t know if there are different laws in different places. shelly556

Have you talked to the guy? Tell him that you’ll call animal control/the police the next time you see it. “Getting rid of” the dog shouldn’t be an option - and if you want to be that anonymous, don’t post on the internet about it.
I agree with a previous poster: talk to the guy yourself, call the authorities and don’t insist on remaining anonymous. If you can get other neighbors who aren’t happy with the dog to call in as well, by all means, do so. Good luck. a gal and her dog

You didn’t say what the police’s response was to your complaint!
Do you live in a city or a suburb or a rural area?
In cities, you can file reports with both Police and Humane Officer/SPCA against the dog. Even here in my rural area, we DO have a Humane Officer to report to.
Ask the police if they have an officer who can go talk to your neighbor and
1) explain the local dog leash laws in your community
2) explain what his legal & financial responsibilities are if his dog enters your property and attacks you and injures you
Do NOT do anything to antagonize the dog.
Call the Police and/or Humane Office (or SPCA) EVERY time the dog threatens or tries to attack you. You need that to document how bad the problem is.
You could buy some dog treats and toss one to the dog to distract it when you go out. It might just start to think of you as a friend if you’re feeding it some nice doggie treats. Nedra E
