Neither. It is better to get a dog from a shelter or from a breeder recommended by that breed’s club. Go to akc.org to find a list of every breed’s club.

There are tons of purebred dogs in shelters, go on and see for yourself. As for the difference, dogs who are cheap are not well bred, and you will more than make up the difference in vet bills. Stacy

  8. PuppyLover Says:

Don’t get a puppy from a pet shop! Try to find a breeder that breeds healthy dogs around your area. You can always ask a vet in your area, if you ask me thats the best way to find a good puppy, Good luck! PuppyLover

either a shelter or a reputable breeder..just because they have ads listed with the AKC or in a dog magazine does not make them an ethical dog breeder..you really need to do your research and check references…. never buy from a pet ship you are only supporting puppy mills and will pay way more than you should ne alambre_ibizan_hounds

For a healthy dog, once you know what kind of dog you want, google local breeders in your area. You either want to get your dog from a fully certified breeder or you could take a trip to your local animal shelter. gidget

  11. Lorelai G Says:

Well, dogs in the newspaper will likely cost less than at a pet shop, but there’s always the risk that they don’t have proper vaccinations, deworming, etc. With a pet shop you are pretty well guaranteed to be getting a healthy puppy. Another option to look into is getting a dog from your local SPCA. There is also a good website: Lorelai G

I wouldn’t buy a puppy from a pet store as it is almost always from a puppy mill. Some pet stores do sell dogs that are from the animal shelter though. When looking in the newspaper for a breeder, avoid those that are offering many breeds of dogs- again, high chance of being a puppy mill. Look for a reputable breeder who raises the pups in a loving family,ie has the litter in their home, spends time handling and loving the pups. luvmyfish44

Acually I would get one from a petstore that have adoptions…Because there are way more dogs that need ta be adopted than puppies that are about 600 dollars even though i did that..Also get one from tha newspaper Brittany R

  15. Agenoria Says:

Pet shops and Newspaper adverts are not recommended places from which to buy a dog.

Breeders vary, and it is best to get a personal recommendation about one before going there. They tend to be more expensive and if that is a problem, then try an animal rescue centre. They are usually run by genuine animal lovers and will be cheaper. Agenoria

  16. valeriedanes Says:

Never a pet shop. Most (probably every) breed club has rules about selling pups in a pet shop. I believe the AKC has something similar but I could be wrong.

The newspaper can’t be counted out entirely. There are occasions when a reputable breeder will go that route to rehome dogs. If you’re knowledgable about the breed and you know the right questions to ask then you should be able to weed through the byb’s fairly quickly just by reading the ads.

If a purebred is at the top of your list of priorities I would recommend rescue. There are numerous Golden rescues around the country.
Here’s a link to the parent clubs national rescue committee site -http://www.grca-nrc.org/
Maybe you’ll be able to find the perfect addition to your family here. valeriedanes

  17. Kristi B Says:

If you are looking for a specific breed then look into rescues.

    For example:

golden retriever rescue in (your state).

A rescue is a group of folks who pull a particular breed out of kill shelters first then regular shelters. Many rescues work with shelters that once a certain breed comes in the shelter calls the rescue to come and get it.

Rescues do get puppies in as well.

If you only want a puppy you can often leave your name with the shelter and rescue to call when one becomes available.

PLEASE do not buy from a pet shop or newspaper. Kristi B

it is better to buy a dog from a good breeder to go and see its parents and see that it has been reared with love and care if you buy from a pet shop you will be supporting the puppy mill trade

  21. tiffseagles Says:

You should NEVER get a dog from a pet shop. They are from back yard breeders and puppy mills. Dogs “bred” by BYBs and puppy mills can have unstable temperaments and health problems because the “breeders” don’t care about the dogs temperament/health and just want money.

Shelters occassionally have puppies available for adoption. They very often get pure breds that are surrendered by their owners because they are no longer wanted. If you want to buy a puppy, go to and find a respectable/responsable breeder. Ask questions and make sure the people are breeding to fit the breed standard. They should have done genetic testing in an attempt to get the best puppies possible.

The ONLY good places to get a dog from are a pound/shelter/rescue or a respectable, responsible breeder. tiffseagles
