The cost of a rough collie will depend on where you live and where the dog comes from. You will need to ensure you are getting the dog from a reputable breeder, and make sure to mention you are looking for a show quality dog. Show quality will definitely cost more than a pet quality dog.
For dog showing, there are multiple venues of showing. there is the confirmation ring, where the judges are looking at the dog’s bone structure, teeth, coat, movement, everything that makes the dog the breed. The judge is comparing your dog against the breed standard of what would a “perfect” collie be. Then, the dog in the ring that best matches that standard wins. The dogs start in a class, based on their sex and age, competing against dogs of similar sex and age. As the dog wins each class, they move up, until a best of breed is awarded. Then, the best of breed of all dogs compete in groups against each other, and again, the dog that best matches their breed standard is chosen as the group winner.
Another segment of dog shows is the obedience ring. There are multiple levels within obedience, starting with Novice, or the basics. This includes walking on leash, walking off leash, standing still for someone to pet them, sit stay, down stay, and come on command. From this level the dogs move into jumps and retrieving, hand signals, and more advance work.
Rally obedience is fairly new and is not quite as rigid as regular obedience is. There are also 3 levels within rally, beginning with basic control and the dog walking on leash with you. Advanced levels includes stays and jumps.
Agility is another option, once the dog has had basic training. Agility is the dog working totally off leash, weaving through poles, going over hurdles and large A frames, and going through tunnels.
So basically, showing is a multi-faceted world. The average show entry is running about $25 per dog, and some shows you will also need to pay a small parking or gate fee.
