My mom says I’m an idiot for feeding my dog table food! She says I’ll eventually kill him! This sounds absolutely lame to me, or am I lame?

Nope, actually a little variety in your dog’s diet is good, as long as it’s not harmful foods like hot sauce or something pure fat, your mom is just being a control freak.
No it’s a good thing. Unless you feeding him junk food, and obviously no chocolate. Dogs are mammals like you and me. It’s not natural for them to be eating the same old processed dog “food” all the time. Nutritional, real food is healthier for everybody, including dogs.
Don’t worry it’s completely fine! Just make sure it’s only once in a while or around 3 times a week max. Also make sure you don’t give him/her Bakers chocolate, avacados, walnuts (or pretty much any nuts) or grapes. Those are the main ones to avoid. You can also google which foods not to give dogs.
Before there was dog food, dogs ate table scraps. Be careful what you feed him though as there are some things dogs can’t eat that we can - for example: chocolate or grapes. Google this and see what is safe for dogs and just don’t overdo it.
There are some food that can kill dogs and some that they are allergic to. For example, they’re allergic to (and have trouble digesting) onions and garlic. Grapes and chocolate can kill them. There are others, but those are the main ones that I remember. Be careful!
Nah, it’s not lame. I choose not to feed my dog table scraps just for the fact that it keeps him from bugging me and my fiancee when we are eating. When we are eating, he knows no difference! (I give him doggie treats tho)
Will it kill your dog? Not unless you give him chocolate. By the way, here’s a fun fact: Dogs LOVE carrots. Try and give him/her sometime. It’s a healthy treat in case you are feeling guilty about giving him/her table scraps.
Well, it depends on how often “once in a while” actually is, and also depends on exactly what you are feeding him.
I give my dog egg (shell, yolk, white - the whole thing), bananas, and carrots. Does that hurt him? No.
But if I was giving him pre-sliced sandwich meat, tacos, spiced meats, ice cream, chocolate…. You get the idea. Then it would not do him any good at all.
No. Just be reasonable, No sharp bones or onions. Most everything else is OK. I would avoid sweets and very salty foods, just like u would for a young child.
i give my dog bits of my food if i’m eating meat, but only if he’s behaving. he knows he gets some if he’s good. i can eat with him sitting on my lap && he won’t even make a move for it until i offer him some. as long as you’re not giving your dog tablescraps as his main food source && the dog isn’t disrupting your meals by begging, etc then i really don’t see the problem with it. just make sure what you’re giving your dog is actually good for him
Depends on what you are giving him… Fruit vegetables and meat are fine.. no salt, no butter and no seasoning.. If you are feeding hot dogs and ham, other junk food, then you are killing your dog.
Don’t give them things like bologna and ham… Chicken is fine.. no cooked bones at all.
It depends on what food you are giving him. Pasta, rice and meat and vegetables are perfectly ok and good for the dog.
No onions, corn on the cob, grapes, choclolate, sultanas or raisins. They are bad for dogs.
There seems to be paranoia on this forum about ‘People Food’ whatever that means.
Good, nourishing food is as good for the dog as it is for people. At least it’s not full of corn, wheat, grains and other useless fillers that are found in all but the super premium, expensive dry food and from what I read on here, not too many people are feeding super premium food to their dogs.
Added: Definitely never give cooked bones.
As for the person who said no chicken. Dogs do very well on a chicken diet. Chicken is an excellent source of protein. Ham and bologna, on the other hand, are processed meats and are not good for the dog.
Table food is fine. Chicken/turkey/sharp bones & chocolate are the exceptions I can remember- just google search “foods dogs can’t eat”. Your mom is overreacting, unless there is a specific medicial reason that particular pet doesn’t need to be eating table food, in which case you should listen to her.
Some table scraps are ok for dogs. It is usually avoided though bc human food does not have all of the nutrition that a dog needs and human food is much more fattening that dog food. Plus, human food contains many things that can be highly toxic or even kill your dog.
Do NOT give your dog table scraps if it contains any of the following: Chocolate, Tomatoes, Onions, Caffeine, Beer, Avocados, Yeast, Fried Foods, Bones, Grapes, Raisins….
I know there are a few others, just can’t think of them right now. Also salt and sugar can cause major health problems for your dog. Many dogs are also unable to process milk and corn. If they can’t process either, you will notice that they become very gassy and/or have excessive amounts of fecal matter.
Raw carrots and plain baked sweet potato strips are good human foods to feed your dog… and most like them. Peanut butter, liver, boiled liver and plain scrambled eggs are all things your dogs will love that are healthy in moderation.
Either way, make sure that the table scraps do not exceed 10% of your dog’s diet. Anything more will cause obesity, heart problems, etc.
never ever feed your dog table scrapes. trust me i know how tempting it can be, but really people food is one of the worst things you can give your dog. it can cause pancreatis quickly in a dog. please don’t do it. do your research and talk to your vet about it.
This depends on what you mean by table food, are you scraping your leftovers into your dogs bowl breakfast lunch dinner or when ever you eat then yes this is not good for dogs, dogs don’t need all those spices seasonings salt pepper sauces ect. Some human food is not safe for dogs to eat.
However if you are giving your dog carrots green beans squash pasta apple strawberry’s blueberry’s then fine as long as the food your are giving is not covered in sauces salt pepper seasonings. As a treat if you want to give your dog a bite then give him some unseasoned food.
Plain unseasoned cooked pasta chicken beef carrots squash rice. Just no seasonings on the food you are giving..
As long as you avoid chocolate, grapes, onions, bread dough…you should be alright. Those are toxic to dogs though. I feed all three of my dogs table food and they haven’t had any problems at all their entire lives.

What kind of table food?
Some veggies and stuff is actually pretty good for him.
Look up sites on what’s good to give your dog to eat that’s “table food”.

I personally, feed my dogs from the table all the time. My dogs are healthy. It just depends on what you are feeding them and how much.

TBH i think it is more ‘natural’ for a dog to eat human food than dog meat.
wolves became dogs about 15 thousand years ago, since then dogs have eaten what people eat. Dog food was only invented 100 years ago.
April 15th, 2009 at 5:18 am
No, but it does breed bad begging habits if you feed him scraps while you are eating.
