Xai asked:

My husband and I live in a lovely house in the countryside with our little boy, and have decided that it’s time now for us to get a dog. We want to get a rescue dog, for obvious reasons, and a few years back I met a lady who worked for a dogs for the disabled charity. She told me that they often have dogs who have either failed the training or are considered too old to work anymore. We feel that highly trained dog like this would be ideal for us however I no longer know the number of the charity she worked for. Can anyone give me a lead to a similar charity? We live in Hampshire (UK).
Chetco that news story was from about 8 miles away from where I live! Arwen thanks for those links - I have e mailed them all this morning.

I am planning on getting a new dog in the near future and was wondering what is the best dry dog food that doesn’t cost too much and is actually good for the dog without too many fillers. I am specifically talking about supermarket and pet store brands so I can find them easily.

Michael the Archangel asked:

I would like to get a canine that serves multiple purposes. I would like it to protect my family and home. I also have milk goats and I would like it to be able herd them in from the field. It should be a breed which is a good pulling dog for helping transfer the milk, bottled and in a cart, from the barn to the home. Finally I will take the dog hunting and have him gaurd the camp while I’m out in the field. . . it will not participate in the actual task of hunting. It should also be good with young children as we have a 3 year old granddaughter. Can I find a well rounded dog breed that can meet these requirements in one dog? If so, which one and if one sex is prefered over another, which would be better.

I’m not a first time dog owner, but I’m curious to see what people would suggest to one that is completely new to dog ownership?
Loving the answers so far! You guys have some good points as well.

Lillana: Actually there are quite a few smaller breeds of dogs who need quite a bit of exercise as well.

Is there a dog breed you would recommend for a home with cats?

I know there are many considerations to make in choosing the breed of dog that is right for your family, but this is a big one for me. I have two cats with no dog experience and I would really like to see them all get along. Not only do I not want them to fight, but I want them to be friends.

Open to just about any suggestions. We like big dogs, small dogs, everything in between, and active dogs as well as lap dogs. We’re not too picky.

My female dog was outside last night and we didn’t realize she was in heat until we heard her “yelping” and chased the male dog away from her. Could she be pregnant, in other words, at what stage is it painful for a female dog. The male dog was chased away as soon as we heard her.

What is the most easily trainable dog to:

- Walk with me without the need of a leash
- Climb mountains in snowy winters and go hiking with me
- Don’t run away from the yard of my house (doesn’t need to be caged or in a box, or tied to a leash)

Please recommend dogs that can be trained for the above purpose, and which dogs are easier to train!

I know that all dogs with proper training can do it but which are most easily trained.

For example, in one episode of dog whisperer, an agressive dog snapped at Cesar’s dog and his dog remained calm.
How did he train his dog to remain calm like that? Just because his dog listens really well?
